Six Brown County Jail inmates were named in indictments last week in connection with the discovery of marijuana in a jail cell.

Sheriff’s officials filed charges last month against eight inmates in connection with the marijuana, which was discovered in the cell on April 24.

The grand jury returned a sealed indictment in which the defendant’s name has not been made public, but the indictment was worded the same as the others — “prohibited substances and items in adult or juvenile correctional or detention facility or on property of Texas Department of Criminal Justice or Texas Youth Commission,” 35th District Court records show.

One of the eight inmates charged last month, Michael Pope, 19, waived indictment. Pope was sentenced last month to concurrent seven-year sentences after pleading guilty to possessing marijuana in the jail and to burglary.

Those named in the indictments were Marvin Perot, 37; George Urrutia, 36; Diego Ramon, 17; Michael Pittman, 23; David Bergman, 52; and Andrew Vasquez, 31.

James Johnson Jr., 27, was among the eight inmates who were charged last month and has already been transferred to a state prison unit in an unrelated case, sheriff’s officials said last month.

Sheriff’s investigators believe Perot had about 6 grams of marijuana, a lighter and rolling papers hidden in a body cavity when he turned himself in at the jail on April 22 on a parole warrant, Sheriff Bobby Grubbs said earlier.

Perot is alleged in a complaint to have provided marijuana to the other seven inmates in the cell. Some of the marijuana had been smoked, Grubbs said.
