Bulletin Staff Report

Jury selection is scheduled to begin Monday in 35th District Court in the murder trial of Jessie Leon McCord, who is accused in the Aug. 20 stabbing death of his ex-wife.

The body of Denise Banks, 59, was found in the Brownwood landfill.

McCord, 46, is held in the Brown County Jail in lieu of $500,000 bond.

Banks’ and McCord’s divorce was finalized in November, 2004, records in the Brown County District Clerk’s Office show.

The two had lived together at a home in Bangs for “financial reasons” until a few days prior to her death, when she moved out after a dispute over electricity, according to testimony at an earlier pre-trial hearing.

Sheriff Bobby Grubbs has said investigators believe Banks was killed at the home. Investigators believe her body was placed in a trash bin and emptied along with the trash bin’s other contents into a sanitation truck, then transported to the landfill the next day, Grubbs has said.

A landfill worker discovered the body while pushing trash with a dozer.
