Special to the Bulletin

Family Services Center will begin a new READ (Read, Encourage And Dream) Parent and Child Learning Program next week, and sessions will be held from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday through Nov. 3. The meetings will be held at the Family Services Center, 901 Ave. B.

The six-week learning program offers a nationally recognized parent education program Active Parenting Now for the adults, presented by Family Services Center, while the children participate in a reading program presented by the Girl Scouts of Central Texas.

The parenting program will be offered to the parents in both English and Spanish. All parents of children between the ages of 5 and 12 years of age are encouraged to attend this event. Advance registration can be completed by calling Family Services Center at (325) 646-5939, weekdays between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.

The Active Parenting Now workshop will show parents of school-age children new tools that can help them raise more successful children with high self-esteems and positive outlooks on life. They’ll also learn positive, non-violent discipline techniques so they can avoid power struggles while still maintaining authority and ultimately lower the stress in the home.

The Girl Scouts of Central Texas have partnered with Family Services Center to provide this reading program for the boys and girls of the READ Parent Program participants.

Leaders of the Children’s READ Program have planned stories and activities for the children to enhance their excitement about literacy and encourage them in their efforts to achieve greater skills in reading and writing.

For information on this or other seminars or to register for the READ Parenting Program, contact the Family Services Center at (325) 646-5939 or e-mail gina@familysc.net.

Family Services Center is funded by the Department of Family and Protective Services, Brown County United Way and private donors. The Wolslager Foundation, Hastings and private donors fund the FSC Literacy Program directly. The programs are free of charge to all participants.
