MULLIN — A Mullin man found his neighbor dead of a shotgun wound Wednesday morning, Mills County Sheriff Douglas Storey said.

Investigators believe James Head, 79, was cleaning his guns Tuesday and had removed a .410 gauge shotgun from a gun rack when the firearm discharged, striking him in the chest, Storey said.

“From what we’re looking at now, it appears it’s going to be accidental,” Storey said.

He said Head lived alone, and a neighbor who went to check on him found him lying on a bed. Head had moved two other guns to the kitchen table, Storey said.
