Brownwood police said there is little hope of recovering $3,600 an 88-year-old woman lost to a con man.

The woman’s son told officer Lynn Beard he noticed that two large withdrawals had been made from his mother’s bank account when he checked it online.

The woman told her son she’d been called by a man who said she had won some money and needed to pay taxes on her winnings, Beard’s report states.

She transferred $1,400 on June 11 to a man in Canada. The next day she transferred another $2,200 to the man.

She told her son she’d received several phone calls from the man, who told her she’d won the money and needed to pay the taxes to claim it. The man also called and said “millions of dollars” were at at stake and it was “between her and one other person,” Beard’s report states.
