Good weekend rains have helped Brown County dodge a burn ban again — at least for another week.

“I’m not going to propose a burn ban at this time,” Brown County Commissioner Joel Kelton said at Monday’s meeting, following a brief discussion. Kelton had asked for consideration of the burn ban to be put on the meeting’s agenda.

“We’ve had some good rains,” Kelton said. “We’re happy. Things were getting pretty dry when we put this on the agenda.”

Most areas of Brown County received at least one inch of rain Friday and Saturday afternoons. Some areas received considerably higher amounts.

Commissioner Larry Traweek said the burn ban needs to remain on the court’s agenda each week, however, so members can act if necessary.

“We’ve certainly been blessed with good rains,” said Commissioner Richard Gist, who presided at the meeting in the absence of County Judge Ray West. “But people still have to be careful when they are burning.”
