EARLY — An Early police sergeant’s observation while getting fuel at a convenience store led to the weekend arrest of a Coleman man on drug and alcohol-related charges.

Police Chief David Mercer described several incidents in an e-mail including the arrest of John Lewis Flores, 36, on charges of possession of marijuana under 2 ounces furnishing alcohol to a minor.

Sgt. Shawn Dibrell was getting fuel at 10:50 p.m. Saturday when he saw a man leave the store with a 30-pack of beer. He sat in his car for a few minutes, and a Dodge Durango pulled up beside him. Both drivers pulled their vehicles to the side of the store.

A passenger who appeared to be a minor got out of the Durango, went to the first vehicle and obtained a beer. Dibrell activated his patrol car’s emergency lights and approached the two vehicles.

The juvenile was identified as a 16-year-old Brownwood resident, and the driver of the first vehicle was identified as Flores. Dibrell found marijuana, and Flores was arrested on the two charges. The juvenile was cited for minor in possession.

At 3:45 p.m. Saturday, patrolman Johnny Brown stopped a 1989 Dodge Dakota in the 600 block of Early Boulevard for an improper left turn. After interviewing the driver and passenger, Brown suspected illegal activity.

Brown gained consent to search the vehicle and found a plastic baggie containing marijuana in the female passenger’s pocket. The male driver yelled that the marijuana was his.

Terry Lee Surber, 43, and Melissa Blansit Surber, 40, were both charged with possession of marijuana under 2 ounces.

Brown arrested Steven Trevino Hernandez, 47, on a criminal trespass charge. A man violated a criminal trespass warning issued to him for all Food Plaza stores.

Early police arrested Steven Hudson, 40, on a charge of possession of a controlled substance after a two-vehicle collision Friday. The accident occurred in the 500 block of Early Boulevard. Hudson was arrested after police found a substance in his pocket.

The accident was one of several that happened Friday afternoon in heavy traffic. According to Mercer:
