United Blood Services has cancelled the blood drive planned today as part of Brownwood Regional Medical Center’s Health Expo. The expo, however, has not been cancelled.
UBS officials said blood usage in the area is low, and it doesn’t want to draw additional blood that would expire. Blood does have a shelf life – red blood cells expire in 42 days of the draw time.
United Blood Services tries to schedule blood drives to meet its projected supply needs.
“The decision to cancel blood drives is not one that United Blood Services likes to make as it appreciates its donors,” according to a statement from UBS. “Understand that when United Blood Services issues an appeal or hosts a blood drive, it’s because the supply is definitely needed.”
