CORPUS CHRISTI — Jessica Richmond, a Comanche County rancher from De Leon, won the 2011 Texas Farm Bureau (TFB) Discussion Meet during the 78th TFB Annual Meeting. The winner was announced during the meeting's general session Sunday at the American Bank Center.
TFB's Discussion Meet encourages problem solving through cooperative discussion among young farmers and ranchers. Four contest finalists discussed the role of agriculture in addressing health and obesity issues during the final round of competition yesterday.
The finalists held a 25-minute conversation on the topic and were scored based on their speaking skills, effective problem solving and cooperative communication with other contestants.
Richmond will receive $5,000 from Farm Credit, as well as an all-expense paid trip to compete at the American Farm Bureau Federation (AFBF) Discussion Meet during the AFBF Annual Convention in Honolulu, Hawaii, in January.
The Discussion Meet runner-up, Layne Chapman of Wilbarger County, will receive $500 from Monsanto and $500 from Crop Production Services. The other two finalists also will receive $500 from Monsanto.
