Brownwood city officials project that a facility to produce drinking-quality water from the effluence of the wastewater treatment plant could cost up to $8 million.

Finance Director Walter Middleton presented figures at Tuesday's Brownwood City Council meeting showing one scenario of what the numbers could look like if the city finances the project through the Texas Water Development Board.

Potential costs:

Annual bond payments to the water development board, over a 20-year period at 5 percent interest: $637,000

Annual cost of operating the plant (mostly for electricity): $200,000

Sources for covering the annual costs of $837,000:

Savings from reducing by 1/3 the amount of water purchased from the Brown County Water Improvement District: $706,000

Increasing the base water rate by 5 percent, which would add $1.20 a month to residential bills.
