A Brownwood man remained in the Brown County Jail Monday in connection with a nightclub stabbing Friday night that sent the suspect's nephew into emergency surgery, police said. The stabbing was in retaliation for a Feb. 25 altercation in which another man was stabbed in the buttocks, witnesses told police.
Michael Salazar Sr., 44, turned himself in late Saturday afternoon and is charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, Brownwood police and jail records state. Bond was set at $100,000.
Daniel David Salazar was stabbed twice in the abdomen during a 10:40 p.m. altercation Friday at Tequila Knights, 102 Johnson, and is recovering after surgery at Brownwood Regional Medical Center, Assistant Police Chief James Fuller said.
Witnesses told police several Salazar family members were at the nightclub Friday night, according to a complaint filed by detective Trey Weathermon in Precinct 3 Justice of the Peace Bryan Thompson's court. Two other family members arrived, and one of them walked up to Daniel David Salazar and made a jabbing motion toward Daniel David's mid-section, witnesses told police. Daniel David grabbed his stomach area, said "I've been stabbed" and staggered back, Weathermon's complaint states.
The assailant calmly walked away as though nothing had happened, and the assailant, another family member and a woman left the club, police were told. Witnesses told police the stabbing appeared to be premeditated, Weathermon's complaint states.
Weathermon went to the emergency room and was able to speak with Daniel David Salazar before he was prepared for surgery, and the victim identified his attacker, the complaint states.
Police obtained a warrant early Saturday morning for Michael Salazar Sr. and looked for him throughout the day, before he turned himself in at the Law Enforcement Center, Fuller said.
The stabbing "appears to be consistent" with retaliation for the Feb. 25 altercation, which happened outside Uncle Roy's Catfish and Seafood Grill, Fuller said.
In that altercation, in which several Salazar family members were present, a man named Albert Salazar was stabbed in the buttocks, Fuller said. A woman was arrested in connection with the stabbing.
