Ardith Lynn "Art" Reed of Brownwood passed away Friday, Aug. 4, 2017 at the Veteran's Administration Hospital in Temple after a four month illness.

Art was born Jan. 15, 1947 in Eden to Marion and Winnie (McGuffin) Reed. He graduated from Brownwood High School, and joined the 121st United States Naval Mobile Construction Battalion (Seabees) where he served two tours of duty in Vietnam. He retired from 3M after 36 years with the company.

Art married Carolyn Huffman on June 29, 1968 in Brownwood.

Art loved his family first and foremost. He enjoyed fishing and hunting. And he loved high school football (Brownwood Lions and six-man games).

Art is survived by his wife of 49 years; daughters Tammy Means and husband Bruce, Stephanie Reed and Armando "Jr" Garcia; one granddaughter, Karissa Means; brother, Marion Reed and wife Sharon; two sisters, Sarah Bryson and Annora Carlton; sister and brother-in-law, Ruth and David Larose.

All of Art's nieces and nephews were very dear to him and he loved them very much. Nephew, Robert Carlton, was the son he never had and the two of them had a very special bond. Art had many good friends. He also had two life-long friends, Steve Canon and Johnny Scott, that were with him at the end.

We would like to thank the ICU doctors, nurses, and staff at the VA Hospital for the respect and compassion they showed Art and the family during this difficult time. We would also like to thank all of the friends and family who supported us with calls, visits and prayers.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, Aug. 7 at Heartland Funeral Home. A celebration of life will be held at 9 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 8 at Heartland Funeral Home with graveside at Greenleaf Cemetery.
