ABILENE – James Paul Reed, 98, of Abilene died Monday, Oct. 2, 2017 in an Abilene hospital. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 5 at the Oldham Lane Church of Christ with Chris McCurley officiating. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. Thursday until service time at the church. Burial will follow at 2 p.m. at the Staley Cemetery in Early. Services are under the direction of Bailey Howard Funeral Home of Clyde, where he will lie in state on Wednesday from 9 a.m. until 6 p.m.
James was born Jan. 22, 1919 in Early to Henry B. and Lela (Nation) Reed. He was raised on a farm in what is now called Early. He graduated from Early High School, where his four sons and several nieces and nephews also graduated. He played all sports in school. He married Ruth Cole in Early on June 1, 1936 and later served in the U.S. Army during WWII. During his service he was in Europe and received two bronze stars and various ribbons. He was a member of the Oldham Lane Church of Christ.
James is survived by three sons, James Reed and wife Marie, Jeff Reed and wife Linda and Tony Reed; seven grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Clarence and Clyde; one sister, Vanessa; his wife Ruth of 63 years; son Lannie and his wife Ann; and a daughter-in-law Pam.
In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to the Oldham Lane Church of Christ Building Fund.
