The Bangs River Bandits lived up to their namesake after snatching Monday’s TTAB 8 U Machine Pitch district tournament game from the Brownwood Red Sox, 17-16, at the Massey Sports Complex.

The Red Sox had a 16-12 lead heading into the bottom of the sixth, but the River Bandits’ bats came alive as a walk-off single by Jonathan Edmisten decided the game.

“It’s crazy baseball. That’s about all it was,” River Bandits coach Jason Duncan said. “I don’t know how many come-from-behind wins we have had this year, but they make an old man out of me really fast.”

The Red Sox seemed in control early after a first-inning, two-RBI, inside-the-park home run put the team up by the end of the first. Bangs answered with an RBI single by pitcher Caiden Orosco that pulled his team within a run, but Brownwood’s Judah Hamilton extended the lead to 4-1 in the third with a bases-loaded, two-RBI double. An RBI groundout by Alex Gomez put Brownwood up 6-1, but no lead is safe in youth baseball. Bangs rallied on a two-RBI single by Kash Morgan, then Morgan was plated on a triple by Easton Labruyere. An RBI single by Jace Duncan pulled Bangs within a run, then the River Bandits took their first lead of the day on a two-run, RBI triple by Jayton Byler.

“Those boys make a game out of it,” Duncan said. “They don’t quit, even if they’re down by 10 runs. That’s the one thing I love about this team. They don’t have any quit in them.”

The Red Sox retook the lead in the fifth after RBIs from Hamilton, Jackson Contrucci and Jackson Clark. Hudson Contrucci added a pair of runs on an RBI double to give Brownwood a commanding 11-7 lead. Run-scoring singles by Garrett Wilkerson, Edmisten and Fagan pulled Bangs within a run once again, but Brownwood seemed to put the game away on hits from Bransen Hancock, Hudson Contrucci, Bennett Williams and Hamilton to give them a 16-12 lead heading into the faithful final inning.

In other 8U tournament action Monday, the Bangs Legends defeated the Brownwood Reds, 12-11, and the Brownwood Rangers, 19-12. The River Bandits later fell to the Brownwood Red Raiders, 14-7.
