COMANCHE - Funeral services for Bernice Shankle, 77, of Stephenville will be at 10 a.m. Monday, Oct. 20, at Comanche Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Kenneth Wilson officiating. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
She died Friday, Oct. 17, 2008, at Mulberry Manor Nursing Home in Stephenville.
She was born June 25, 1931, in Comanche County to Johnnie Warren Taber and Carrie Lee (Humphrey) Taber. She was married to Taylor Eugene Shankle on Feb. 18, 1953, in the First United Methodist Church parsonage in Comanche. He died July 28, 2007.
After graduating as the valedictorian of Comanche High School in 1948, she began her banking career with Comanche National Bank for 9 1/2 years, and then went to an Abilene bank for 29 1/2 years. She retired June 25, 1986, as vice president of InterFirst Bank in Abilene, now Bank of America. She and her husband moved to Comanche County, and then to Stephenville in 2002.
Survivors incude a sister, Rudine Smart of Stephenville; a nephew and wife, Dean and Sherry Carlisle of Red Oak; and several great-nieces and great-nephews.
She was preceeded in death by her parents, Johnnie and Carrie Taber; a brother, Elton Taber; and three sisters, Alta Taber, Iva Taber and Louise Stephens.
