Melvin Lee Guthrie, 94 of Brownwood, Texas, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 6, 2007. Funeral services, under the direction of Davis-Morris Funeral Home, will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 10, 2007, at the Davis-Morris Chapel. The family will receive friends 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 9, 2007, at the funeral home.
Melvin was born June 5, 1913, in Hasse, Texas, to John and Minnie (McNeill) Guthrie. He graduated from Sidney School and attended Howard Payne University. He married Ruby Mae Smart Oct. 2, 1932, in Comanche, Texas. He was a Baptist minister and a member of Coggin Avenue Baptist Church. He was employed at JC Penney and Weakley-Watson.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Ruby; son Wayne, three brothers; George Dale, Oliver, and Billy Guthrie; and three sisters, Lucille Morrow, Johnnie Ward and Missie Vines.
Survivors include daughter, Nelda Bailey; two sisters, Clydie Drennman and Carnell Potts; three brothers, Lonneal, Lamar and Bobbie Guthrie; five grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; and care givers and friends at Brownwood Nursing Center.
The family wishes to express their thanks to the Brownwood Nursing Center. Melvin dearly loved the “center” as it was his home and family. They laughed and joked with him, making him feel loved and happy. The nurses gave him the best TLC that Earthly Angels could give.
