Funeral services for Lela Wood, age 97, of Brownwood, will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 17, 2008, in the Milton Avenue Baptist Church with the Rev. Ellis John Villarreal officiating. Interment will follow in the Greenleaf Cemetery under the direction of Davis-Morris Funeral Home. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday evening from 6:30 until 7:30.
Mrs. Wood died Monday, Oct. 13, 2008, in Brownwood Regional Medical Center.
She was born in Dickens County to Bailey and Anna Pearl (Fry) Hock.
Lela was a longtime resident of Brownwood and worked as a presser for Shaw’s Laundry until her retirement at age 81. She was a faithful member of Milton Avenue Baptist Church. Over the years she took in dozens of ministerial students from Howard Payne to feed and help. These students have gone on to serve in many Southern Baptist churches in the United States and overseas.
Lela is survived by two sons, Gene Reed and wife Dona of Floydada and Cecil Reed and wife Ella of Broken Bow, Okla.; adopted grandson, Ellis John Villarreal of Brownwood, 16 grandchildren, Rhonda Boykin and husband Tim of Brownwood, Michael Cochran of Brownwood, Steve Cochran of Anchorage, Alaska, Dwana Muro and husband Ernie of Rockport, Jacky Cochran and wife Cheri of Brownwood, Cathy Gale and husband David of Lavernia, Kendall Reed of Florida, Kerry Reed of Floydada, Barbara Wiley and husband Jeff of Amarillo, Linda Dollar and husband Keith of Benbrook, Cecilia Tidmore and husband Bruce of Amarillo, Craig Reed of Valiant, Okla., Danny Reed and wife Karen of Idabel, Okla., Terri Bedford and husband Jay of Royce City, Dana Baird of Idabel, and Jana Huse of Idabel; 37 great-grandchildren; 23 great-great-grandchildren; and four sisters, Maggie Stanfield of Granbury, Wynona Thorne of Lubbock, Frankie Sprouse of Baird and Thelma Smith of Baird.
She was preceded in death by her parents, two husbands, Raymond Reed and Donald Wood, a son Jacky Reed, a daughter, Wanda Cochran, three brothers, George, Curtis, and E.L. Hock, and a sister, Inez Rhodes.
