CROSS PLAINS — Funeral services for Mary Elizabeth Coffey Bates, 90, of Cross Plains will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday, May 21, at the Cross Plains Church of Christ with Bob Pipes officiating. Burial will follow in the Cross Plains Cemetery. Higginbotham Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
She died Monday, May 19, 2008.
She was born Feb. 12, 1918, in Leaday to Lon and Clara Coffey and had lived in Cross Plains since 1965. She was a former custodian and library aide for the Cross Plains Independent School District. In 2007, she was nominated for volunteer of the year for Callahan County for her work with school children in the Foster Grandparent Program.
Survivors include one brother, Charles Coffey and wife Shirley of Abilene; two daughters, Darla and husband Alton Wilcox of Angleton and Kathy Pippin and husband Ruben of Burleson; two sons, Tommy Bates and wife Kathleen Bates of Clyde and Jimmy Bates and wife Linda of Early; 10 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband M.Z. (Buck) Bates; one son Kenny Bates; a sister and brother-in-law, Pauline and O.B. Switzer; and a brother Fred Coffey.
