Jack R. Jones, age 82, of Cross Plains, passed away Saturday, Dec. 21, 2007, in Early at C.A.R.E., Inc. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 24, 2007, at Higginbotham Chapel in Cross Plains with Larry Copeland officiating. Burial will follow in the Cottonwood Cemetery in Callahan County.
He was born on Feb. 5, 1925, to James M. and Effie P. (Coffey) Jones in Brown County, Texas. Jack attended school in Rising Star and graduated from Grandfalls High School in 1942. Jack joined the United States Navy shortly after he graduated and served in Bora Bora and Somoa on a PT boat; he was on one of two boats out of 100 that survived an attack at Somoa.
In 1947 he returned to Rising Star where he met and married Uva M. Hellums on Jan. 11. Jack worked for Halliburton in Farmington, N.M.; then for El Paso Gas in Farmington, N.M., and Ignacio, Colo., for a total of 20 years; after moving to Cross Plains he worked for the CPISD for one year then worked for the Diboll ISD for 11 years, then retired and made their home here in Cross Plains for the last 17 years. Jack and Uva celebrated 60 years of marriage before she preceded him in death on July 20, 2007.
Survivors include his daughter, Effie Dawkins and husband Don of Brownwood; son, Randy Jones of Pomeroy, Wash.; brother, Carter Jones of Dublin; sister, Shirley Mangum and Betty Godfrey, both of Midland; sister-in-laws Edith Jones, Pauline Parsons and LaFond Ghormley; and five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Uva; a sister, Treleta Martin; and a brother, Mac Jones.
The family will receive friends and relatives at Higginbotham Funeral Home in Cross Plains for a time of visitation Sunday, Dec. 23, 2007, from 5 to 7 p.m.
