Funeral services for Wynetta D. Shields, 87, will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 27, at Lee Chapel A.M.E. Church.

Wynetta Shields was born April 25, 1923, in Minerva, Texas, to the parentage of Smith and Margret Hights McArthur. When Wynetta was only 8 years old, her mother died and she went to live with an aunt, Essie Mae Wallace in San Antonio where she graduated from Phillis Wheatley High School. She then moved to Los Angeles, Calif., where she met and was married to Frank Shields. Later she moved to Tacoma, Wash., to be near her sister Ella May. She was employed by Northwest Administrators in building maintenance in Tacoma until her retirement. Always busy, after moving back to Brownwood in 1998, she remained active being a diligent worker at good Samaritan Ministries. Into her 80s she could be seen around Smittys Bar-B-Q sweeping up and picking up. Never one to sit around she was always busy picking up, folding up or putting up. Always strong in her faith she would be active serving her Savior in whatever city she lived. She remained a faithful member of Lee Chapel A.M.E. Church until her health prevented her from attending.

She left this earth to sweep the streets of gold on Wednesday morning, Dec. 22, 2010.

Left to cherish her memory are two brothers, Smith McArthur Jr. of Brownwood, and John Hedges of Temple, Texas; one nephew. Ravia McArthur, six nieces, Willie Jean Ozzy, Vera McArthur, Margret Thomas, Rechelle McArthur, Racheal Carrathus and Elizabeth Gallaway; her Lee Chapel family and friends; and other friends.

She was preceded in death by both parents; and one sister, Ella May Baldwin.

Services are under the direction of Brownwood Funeral Home.
