Graveside funeral services for Don Lewis Burks, age 72, of Lake Brownwood, will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, April 29, 2009, at the Pleasant Valley Cemetery in Brown County with Dr. Art Allen officiating. Family visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, at the funeral home. Heartland Funeral Home in Early is in Charge of arrangements.

Don passed away Monday, April 27, 2009, at his home.

Don was born on March 10, 1937, in San Angelo, Texas, the son of the late Henry Lewis Burks and Lue Mirtie Baird Burks. He was raised in Abilene, and he graduated from Abilene High in 1955 where he served as president of his senior class. In 1956 he was married to his first wife, Ellen Jane Perry.

She preceded him in death. He graduated from Baptist Bible College in 1959 where he was a theology major. He served as a pastor for several churches, and was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Brownwood. He was also a bass singer for a gospel group. He had been a resident of Lake Brownwood since 1986, formerly of Carrollton. He retired from the Department of Human Services. On Oct. 2, 2003, he was married to his second wife, Jo Ann Berry, in Brownwood.

Survivors include his wife, Jo Ann Burks of Lake Brownwood; son, Lewis Arthur Burks of Lake Brownwood; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry Lewis Burks and Lue Mirtie Burks; first wife, Ellen Jane Perry Burks; and sister, Dorothy Ruth Burks Caffey Lockhart.
