Funeral services for Joan Speich, age 83, a longtime resident of Brown County and more recently a resident of Carillon in Lubbock, will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 7, 2008, in the Davis-Morris Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow in Eastlawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Friday evening from 5:30 until 7:30.

A memorial service will be held in Neil Chapel on the Carrillon Senior Living Campus at 10 a.m. Thursday, June 5, in Lubbock.

Mrs. Speich died Wednesday, June 4, 2008, in Lubbock due to heart failure. Born Joan Wilson in January 1925 in Bangs, Texas, she was the youngest of three siblings born to William Malcolm and Adeline (Medley) Wilson. Joan graduated from Bangs High School and Howard Payne University. In 1946, she married John Jacob Speich of Ladysmith, Wis., who had enlisted in the U. S. Army Air Corps and was stationed at San Angelo, Texas.

She and John raised three children and operated a dairy farm near Early, Texas, for over 30 years. In 1979, John became a full-time Rural Mail Carrier and he and Joan moved to Early. She was a member of Early United Methodist Church. For many years, she and John assisted others by delivering food and necessities to needy families throughout the Brownwood area. For their volunteer work, John and Joan were awarded the Texas State Volunteers of the Year for 1992. In February 1994, John died from cancer. In 2005, Joan moved to Lubbock to be near her family, and has been a resident of the Carillon Senior Living Campus.

She is survived by three children, Jane Byrum of Vienna, Va., Jean Davis of Merkel, Texas, and David Speich of Lubbock, Texas. She is also the loving grandmother to seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband John; and siblings Thomas Wilson of Amarillo and Ina W. LaCour formerly of San Angelo.
