Leland Hale Martin born in Runnels County Jan. 9, 1929, to the late Wallace E. and Mattie P. Martin. He passed away June 8, 2007, at Brownwood Regional Medical Center at the age of 78.
As a child he moved to Coleman County and where he grew up in the Brown Ranch Community. He graduated from Mozelle High School in 1946. He married Dorothy Lee Dalton in Coleman June 15, 1946. His passion for serving the Lord led him to many years as Sunday School Teacher, Department Director and Sunday School Superintendent.
In over 50 years as an ordained deacon, he served at Harmony Baptist Church in Fisk, Melwood Baptist Church and Coggin Avenue Baptist Church in Brownwood where he was currently a member.
Leland was preceded in death by his loving wife of 45 years, Dorothy Lee Dalton, and baby daughter Claudia Darlene Martin. Also, sister Stella Moore, brothers Fred Martin and J.M Martin. He lived in south Coleman County where he and his late brother-in-law T.J. Dalton Jr. operated the Dalton Dairy. In 1969 he began in the cattle mineral business in Brownwood, moving there in 1974. He later owned and operated LandM Mineral Company.
He is survived by daughter and sons-in-law Rhonda and Gary McConaughey of Spring, Brenda and Randy Yancy of Huntsville, Marcia Jill and Bill Wells of Brownwood. Granddaugh-ters and husbands, Kandra and Jason Foster and Tanna and Matt Lawson, all of Spring. Grandson, Kirk McConaughey of Houston and grandson and wife Calvin and JoAnn Wells of Stephenville. Four great-grandchildren Payton, Miles, Kamryn and Blayne Foster of Spring. One sister, Winnie Pearl Nelson of Brownwood. Four brothers, Herbert Martin of Brownwood. Curtis Martin of Abilene, Billy Joe Martin of Hattiesburg, MS, Roneal Martin of West Palm Beach, FL, two brothers-in-law N.T. Dalton of Chaney, WA, and Billy Jack Deal of Coleman. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. In 1992 he married Maxine Oleta Smith in Brownwood where they made their home and owned a rental business. With this union he gained more loving family including Rick and wife, Linda Smith of Austin, Karen Duncan of Arlington and Val and husband, David Fine of Dublin. Grandchildren, Lisa Simek of Austin, David and wife, Stacy Smith of Austin, Regan Duncan and Drew Duncan of Arlington, Mark and wife, Amanda Fine of Denton, Matt and wife, Bobbi Fine of Dalhart. Great grandchildren, Reese and Will Simek, Riley Smith, Sydney Judd, Trinity Fine, and Brice, Brayden, Tadd and Titon Fine. Also a host of nieces and nephews. His creative loving humor, Christian family values and hard working example were and will continue to be, an inspiration to his family, as well as many many special friends.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday June 11, 2007, at Coggin Ave Baptist Church with Bro. Bill Allen and Bro. Rick Cavitt officiating, interment will follow in the Brown Ranch Cemetery, Coleman County.
The family received friends from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday evening at Davis-Morris Funeral Home.
