Genevia Mae Barner, 76, of Odessa, peacefully passed away after a brief illness Tuesday, May 1, 2007.
She was born Friday, March 6, 1931, in Brownwood, Brown County, Texas to J.L. and Lela Mae (Purifoy) Johnson.
She was a licensed vocational nurse at the Medical Center Hospital emergency room. She was a business lady, who had previously owned a ceramic shop and a restaurant. Genevia also raised poodles. She was a devout Christian who mothered all of her neighborhood kids. She was a loving mother, grandma “Nanny,” great-grandma, and friend.
Those left to cherish her love and memories include her husband, Roy Barner of Odessa; three sons, Roy L. Barner and Doug Mathis, both of Odessa, and Dean Dixon of Fredericksburg, Texas; four daughters, Peggy Mathis Sparhawk, Brenda Joyce Clank, Joyce Adams and Patricia Gail Cerda, all of Odessa; two brothers, Darrell Johnson of Weatherford, Texas, and LaValle Chastine of Brownwood; 20 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; and two great-great grandchildren.
Genevia was preceded in death by her parents, J.L. Johnson and Lela Mae “Le Momma” Johnson.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, May 3, 2007, at the Acres West Funeral Chapel in Odessa. A graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Friday, May 4, 2007, at Greenleaf Cemetery in Brownwood.
