Funeral services for John Garland Strickland, age 82, of Brownwood will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, June 4, at the Heartland Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Dr. David Schrum officiating. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday in the Tyler Memorial Cemetery in Tyler, Texas under the direction of Heartland Funeral Home of Early.
John died Monday evening, June 1, 2009, at the Cross Country Healthcare Center.
He was born Aug. 14, 1926, in Arp, Texas, the son of the late John and Betty Mae Sweat Strickland. He grew up in East Texas near Arp and later served in the U. S. Navy during World War II. He was married to Naomi Malone in Tyler on Aug. 4, 1948. She preceded him in death in 1998. He later married Betty Whitlock at Brownwood on Jan. 6, 2001. He had been a resident of Brownwood for the past 12 years moving from Tyler where he had worked as a supervisor for a foundry. He enjoyed bowling, bingo, and game rooms and was formerly very active in square dancing.
He is survived by his wife, Betty Strickland of Brownwood; two sons, Gene Strickland and wife Sherion of Whitehouse and Ricky Strickland and wife Jenny of Brownwood; six grandchildren, Shannon and Micah Strickland, and Debbie Wood of the Tyler area, and Allen and Jason Strickland, and Jessica Christiansen all of Brownwood; four great-grandchildren, Justin and Adam Wood, Addison Strickland, and Hayden Christiansen; two brothers, Arland Strickland and Bobby Strickland; and two sisters, Mary Tompkins and Patsy Williams
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Cecil Strickland
