Marion Watson Beeken passed away on June 26, 2008, at her home in California, with her family at her side, after a long battle with stroke-related illnesses. Marian was 85 years old.

She was born Sept. 7, 1922, in Brownwood, Texas. Marianís parents were Walter Weakley Watson and Edith Snyder Watson. Marianís birth mother, Kathlyn Holmes Watson, died when she was 4. Marian graduated from Brownwood High School as valedictorian and received her BA and MA from Texas State College for Women. After teaching in Alabama and at Hockaday, Marian moved to California in 1947, where she taught at UC Berkeley, and married Arthur Hansen Beeken in 1950. Marian lived in El Cerrito, Calif., for the past 54 years.

A professional teacher, Marian taught dance, health and physical education at Merritt College in Oakland, Calif., from 1959 through 1992. Marian also owned Beeken Candies in Berkeley, Calif., with her husband, Arthur, from 1951 to 1968. Marian was one of the founders of Beeken Family Properties in 1992.

Marian is survived by her two children, Arthur Watson Beeken of Healdsburg, Calif., and Cynthia Beeken Petersen of San Rafael, Calif.; her brother Walter Watson, of Palos Verdes Estates, Calif.; and her two sisters Kay Holiday, of Village of Golf, Fla., and Rosemary Leonard of Irving, Texas, as well as a loving group of extended family and friends.

Friends are invited to join the family in a celebration of Marianís life at a memorial to be held at the Unitarian Universalist (formerly First Unitarian) Church of Berkeley, 1 Lawson Rd., Kensington, CA 94707, on Saturday, July 26, 2008, at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions are invited to the American Stroke Associa-tion.
