Thomas “Tommy” Mills — affectionately known as Daddy, Granddaddy, Paw-paw and Greatdad, passed gently into the arms of Jesus July 20, 2008, surrounded by his family.

Daddy was born April 10, 1931, in Santa Anna, to Augustus and Bessie Mills. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy from 1947-1951. After discharging from the Navy, he met the love of his life and his soul mate Doris Marie Flanary in March, 1951. They married July 11, 1951. Daddy worked as a roofing contractor in Brownwood and San Angelo before moving to Venice, Calif., where he was a maintenance operator for Helms Bakery. He then moved his family back to San Angelo where they made their home and continued his work in roofing.

Daddy loved the outdoors and teaching his children, and eventually his grandchildren, survival skills, hunting and fishing. His favorite hobbies were spoiling his grandbabies and gardening. He always had a pocket full of change for his “babies” and beautiful flowers growing. He was a very gifted storyteller and would often get so tickled at his own stories that he couldn’t quite finish them. Daddy loved children, animals and “little old people” but his biggest love was his family.

He is survived by his love of 57 years Doris Mills; his children, Tommy Wayne and Karla Mills, Roy and Barbara Mills, Michael “Mike” and Denise Mills and Sherri and Johnny Carney. He is also survived by 17 grandchildren, Tammy Daniels, Lee Ann and Terry Carlton, Thomas “Hayden” and LaMarlis Mills, Lei Lani and Joey Bonds, Roy “Bubba” and Margie Mills, Shannon and Garrett Martin, Sierra and Katlynn Mills, Danelle “Nicci” Mills, Crystal and Cortney Yungman, Tonya, Tara and Tim Robertson, Miranda and Dan Carney and Nicholas and Caycie Carney and 27 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by brothers Jerry Mills of Brownwood, Tyson Mills of New Hampshire and sister Arlene Barkett of Burbank, Calif.; brothers-in-law Lonnie and Nora Mae Flanary, Kenneth and Sherry Flanary, Jody and Ethel Flanary, and Randy and Lona Flanary, numerous nieces and nephews, and his companion “pee-wee”.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his pop Paul Burson, brothers Carl Jameson, Charlie Mills, Hoyt Mills, Doyle Mills, Wendall Burson; Wyman Burson; sisters Juanita Crosby and Sally Sparks; and granddaughter Erin Mills.

Funeral Services will be held at 2 p.m., Thursday, July 24, at Johnson’s Funeral Home with the Rev. Charles Beal officiating. Internment to follow at Lawnhaven Cemetary. Pall bearers will be Tommy Wayne, Roy, Mike, Hayden, Bubba Mills and Johnny Carney.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be sent to Bethel Baptist Church Building Fund, 800 Culwell, San Angelo, TX 76903.
