Mary Frances Downing, age 67, of Brownwood, passed away peacefully to her heavenly home on Tuesday, May 13, 2008. Her loving and gentle spirit will be greatly missed.
Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, May 15, 2008, at May Cemetery, with Dr. Gary Torian officiating. All arrangements are under the direction of Davis-Morris Funeral Home.
She was born in Brownwood, Texas, on Aug. 18, 1940, to W.R. and Alta Lee Killion Cornelius. She graduated from Brownwood High School in 1958. She was married to Donald Vann Stanford Oct. 18, 1958. Together, they had three children, Teresa Denise, Ronald Vann and Samuel Scott Stanford. Mr. Stanford preceded her in death.
Mary later was married to W.T. “Tooter” Downing of Winters, Texas, on June 1, 1991. Mary had previously attended Midwestern University in Wichita Falls, Texas, studying psychology and sociology. She was involved in volunteer community work and civic organizations and worked for many years at Texas MH/MR in Childress, Texas, later employed by Superior Cable Corporation in Brownwood. Mary was a member of Central United Methodist Church. Retired to gardening and the care of her family, Mary cherished the love and friendships of her children and grandchildren, each holding a special place in her heart.
She was preceded in death by her parents, and her brother Phillip Larry Cornelius, she is survived by her husband, W.T. “Tooter” Downing of Brownwood; daughter, Teresa Koen and husband, John, of Goldthwaite, Texas; sons, Vann Stanford of Brownwood, and Sam Stanford and Sharron, of Arlington, Ariz; her precious grandchildren, Kara Koen, Hunter Stanford and Sharee Stanford; sister, Virginia Anglin and husband Ray, of Brownwood; and several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.
