ATHENS – Services for Billy Edward “Bill” Withrow, 77, Athens, are scheduled for 3 p.m. Thursday, April 29, at Carroll-Lehr Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Joe Warren, Grady Chastain and David Mahan officiating. Burial will follow in Athens Cemetery. Visitation for friends and family will be 6-8 p.m. today, at the funeral home. Mr. Withrow died Sunday, April 25, 2010, in Tyler.

    He was born Feb. 4, 1933, in Abilene to the late George William Edger and Eve Mae Bice Withrow and resided there until 1966. Bill lived in Brownwood 25 years where he was actively engaged in a number of business ventures. He worked as a salesman for Weatherby Ford Company, owned and operated Jack’s Barbecue Restaurant, was a salesman for the Tackle Shop and a Representative for Burney Sporting Goods. While in Brownwood he was a member of Cornerstone  Fellowship Church.

    Upon moving to Athens in 1994, Bill became very involved in volunteer work with Make a Wish Foundation, taught fly fishing at Clements Boy Scouts Ranch and organized picnics for Athens ISD Special Education Students. He owned and operated the Rod and Knives Shop on West Corsicana and attended Eastern Hills Church of Christ.

    Bill was an avid sportsman who enjoyed hunting, fishing, athletics and read incessantly for pleasure. His grandchildren and great grandchildren were the “apple of his eye” to him. He was always joyously involved in all of their events, sporting events in particular.

    Survivors include his wife of 44 years, Helen Davison Withrow, Athens; son, William “Bub” Withrow of San Antonio; daughter, Marsha Spears and husband Bob of Athens; grandchildren, Christy Perkins and husband Craig of Blanco, Lauren Withrow of Greenville, Brian, Matt, Scott and Kelly Spears of Athens; great grandchildren, Jake, Levi and Luke Perkins, Adin and Leah Lewis; nieces and nephews, Patsy Armbrust, Peggy Moore, and Randy Withrow.     Bill was preceded in death by an infant sister and brother Jack Withrow.Reznikoff, Cliff Kirkham, Brian Spears, Matt Spears, Scott Spears.
