Adelle Cathey, formerly of Midland, passed away Wednesday, Aug. 15, 2007, at Pecan Point Assisted Living and Memory Care Center, Sherman, Texas, surrounded by family members.

She was born July 4, 1928, to Charlie Connaway and Maggie Gaines Connaway in Brownwood, Texas. A graduate of Brownwood High School, Adelle also attended Howard Payne College and Midland College. On Dec. 2, 1945, she married Doyle Cathey in Brownwood, Texas. He preceded her in death in 2001.

She was also preceded in death by her parents; son, Charles Lloyd Cathey; and brother, Charles Lee Connaway.

Prior to her retirement, Adelle was a real estate broker with Hasha Realtors. She was a member of Wilshire Park Baptist Church in Midland.

In the late 1950s, Adelle and Doyle were members of Crestview Baptist Church and joined with a group of from various churches in Midland to start a mission on the growing west side of Midland. That mission became Wilshire Park Baptist Church. She was a charter member of the church and was active until she moved to Sherman for health reasons.

She taught Sunday School in the children's department for almost 50 years. She was also involved in the Women's Missionary Society at WPBC and Midland Baptist Association. She taught leadership classes to train mission leaders for the churches in Midland. She was involved in teaching missions through Sunbeams, Mission Friends and Girls' Auxiliary. She had been director of Midland Baptist Association Sunbeam, which later changed its name to Mission Friends. She began the Association Mission Friends Day Camp at Circle Six Ranch and was director for many years. Later she was director of GA Camp at Circle Six. She remained director until 2000. She took her last group of girls to camp in June of 2001. Adelle was also involved in Midland Association of Realtors and Community Bible Studies. She was involved in local PTA when her children were in school.

Alzheimer's had taken a toll on her physical body the last few months, but she always had the mischievous grin and a wave and plenty of kisses and pats and pinches until the final minutes for her family and care partners at Pecan Point.

Adelle is survived by her daughters, Virginia Cathey of Midland, Texas; Doylene Cathey Arnold and her husband, Harold, of Howe, Texas; son Clem Cathey of Midland, Texas; grandson, Lee Arnold and his wife, Camille, of Sherman, Texas; granddaughter, Julie Snapp and her husband, Ryan, of Howe, Texas; and great-granddaughters, Avery, Emery, and Kamry Snapp.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 17, at Ellis Funeral Home.

Funeral services have been scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 18, at Ellis Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Steve Tims of Wilshire Park Baptist Church officiating. Interment will follow at Resthaven Memorial Park.
