Funeral services for Leman A. Horton, age 86, of Lake Brownwood, will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 14, 2008, at Rocky Creek Baptist Church with Rick Justice officiating. Interment will follow in the Rocky Creek Cemetery under the direction of Davis-Morris Funeral Home. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Wednesday evening from 6 until 8.
Mr. Horton died Monday, Aug. 11, 2008, at his home.
He was born on Dec. 18, 1921, in Santa Anna to Claud and Ethel (Brawley) Horton. Leman graduated from Mozelle High School in 1940. He served his country in World War II as a Platoon Sergeant in the United States Marine Corps, 5th Marine Division. Leman was a survivor of the Battle of Iwo Jima.
Following his military service, Leman returned to Brownwood where he was married to Frances Cozart on Jan. 23, 1947. She preceded him in death on Oct. 14, 1999. Leman worked as a carman for Santa Fe Railway for 34 years before retiring. During his retirement, he enjoyed working cattle on his farm.
Leman is survived by his son Ron L. Horton and wife Nancy of Bryan, three grandchildren, Rebecca Franke and husband Richard of Bayview, Rhonda Horton of Dallas, and Rachel Haas and husband Ryan of Washington, D.C.; two great-grandchildren, Richard Franke III and Elizabeth Franke; a brother, Rondoe Horton of Coleman; and a sister, Ethel Christell McDonald of Lake Brownwood.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, and a daughter, Ramona Horton in 1961.
