SAN SABA — Services for Dan Heflin Kuykendall, former Congressman from the Ninth District of Tennessee, will be at 2 p.m. today at Mullins United Methodist Church in Memphis, Tenn. Additional services will be held at the Cherokee Unied Methodist Church in Cherokee, Texas, at 2 p.m. Monday, June 16, with burial at the Kuykendall Family Cemetery. Howell-Doran Funeral Home of San Saba is handling local arrangements.
He died June 12, 2008.
He was born July 9, 1923, in Cherokee, the son of Sarah and Groves Kuykendall. He graduated from Texas A&M University in 1947 after serving in the Army Air Corps as a B-17 pilot. His employment with Procter & Gamble brought him to Memphis in 1955. His political involvement began in 1963 when he became chairman of the Shelby County Republican Party. In 1966, he became the first Republican Congressman from west Tennessee since 1883. He was re-elected in 1968, 1970 and 1972.
Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Jacqueline Meyer Kuykendall; sons Dan, Jr. (Kirk) and his wife Kathy, Jack, and his wife, Cindy; his daughters, Kathleen Kuykendall Boyd and her husband Jim, and Kay Kuykendall Wettemann and her husband, Bob; eight granddaughters; and one grandson.
The family requests memorials to the Boy Scouts of America, 171 S. Hollywood, Memphis, TN 38112, HC Williamson Memorial Fund.
