Funeral services for Roy E. Bird, age 95, of Blanket, will be at 4 p.m. today, at the Davis-Morris Funeral Home Chapel with Gary Day officiating.  Interment with military honors will follow in Eastlawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 2 until 3:30 p.m. today, at the funeral home prior to the service.

Mr. Bird died Tuesday, Sept. 22, 2009, in Brownwood.

Roy was born on April 13, 1914, in Blanket to Leonard and Annie Virginia (Richmond) Bird. He served his country in World War II in the US Navy and served in the Naval Reserve for a number of years following active duty. He was married to Mary Bird on Dec. 19, 1952, in Denton. She preceded him in death on April 21, 2005. Roy was a longtime member of the First Baptist Church of Blanket. Roy was an educator and administrator for the Brownwood Indepen-dent School District for many years. He was happiest working on his farm near Blanket.

Roy is survived by his children, Louanne Mc-Anally and husband Jim of Coleman, Roy Spaulding and wife Freda of Olympia, Wash., Gene Spaulding and wife Sue of Granbury, Joe Spaulding and wife Sue of Banks, Ore., and Roylynn Harris of Carrollton; 18 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Chloe Thorp Laurgherty of Austin.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; a brother, T.C. Bird; two sisters, Maurine Underwood and Gladys Bird; and a daughter, Martha Bird Richardson.

The family suggests memorials be made to the American Cancer Society, American Heart Associa-tion, or to Lighthouse Hospice.
