Ellis Mahan, 88, of Brownwood and formerly of Bangs, died Friday morning, Dec. 4, 2009, at the Songbird Lodge Nursing Home.
Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 7, 2009, in the Heartland Funeral Home Chapel with Bill Slaymaker officiating. Burial will follow in the Greenleaf Cemetery under the direction of Heartland Funeral Home of Early. Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
He was born April 6, 1921, in Breckenridge, Texas, the son of the late Wiley Leroy and Allie Mae Davee Mahan. After graduating from high school and attending some college in Austin, he worked at Douglas Aircraft during WW II, prior to joining the Merchant Marines. After the war, he served with the Texas Highway Patrol as a trooper in New Braunfels. He later worked for the Texas Youth Commission in Gatesville prior to transferring to Brownwood in 1977. He retired from TYC while in Brownwood.
He married Gladys Clack in Bangs on June 15, 1992. He attended Coggin Avenue Baptist Church and was a past Exalted Ruler of the Elks Lodge.
He is survived by his wife, Gladys Mahan of Brownwood; two sons, Wylie Harris Mahan and wife Linda of Ethelsville, Ala., and Joe Mahan and wife Wendy of Buckholts, Texas; four daughters, Elece Harrison and husband Ben of Tallahassee, Fla., Linda Mahan of Ochlocnee, Ga., Rita Brennan and husband of Rio Rancho, N.M., and Vickie Poole and husband Matthew of Ponder, Texas; a step-son, John Strickland of Brownwood; two step-daughters, Joann Rhodes of Brownwood and Janet Waldon of Weatherford; a brother, S.L. Mahan and wife Gladys of Bangs; 15 grandchildren; eight step-grandchildren; several great grandchildren; and seven step-great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Benjamin Mahan; and a sister, Alliene Mahan Miller.
