The Rev. I.L. “Leroy” Walker, age 89 of Bangs, died, Tuesday, July 17, 2007, at a local nursing home.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. this morning at Heartland Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Carol Nichols officiating. Interment will follow at Eastlawn Memorial Park.
The family received friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, July 20, 2007, at the funeral home.
Ivors Leroy Walker was born Dec. 18, 1917, in Baird, the son of the late Arthur and Mary Walker. Leroy married Stella Wheat in Brownwood, Texas, at the courthouse at 2 p.m. on April 13, 1937, and they have stood together for more than 70 years. He started out in the Pittsburgh Steel Mills during the war and became a pastor for various Assembly of God Churches. He founded the First Assembly of God Church in Stratford, Texas, after 12 years of pioneer work in Stratford they moved to Floydada, Texas, and pastored the First Assembly of God eventually moving to the farm in Bangs.
He worked for 3M, retiring in 1980. Living at the farm, he pastored the Coleman Assembly of God Church and served as interim pastor for many of the churches in Brown County. His grandchildren and great-grandchildren knew him as “Pops”; he will be missed.
Survivors include his wife, Stella Walker, who resides at the farm in Bangs; son, Jack Walker, who resides with his wife at the farm in Bangs; son, Dennis Walker, who resides with wife Jeanell in Richardson; sister, Billie Mae Palino of Albuquerque, N.M.; six grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and two sisters, Bernice Parrack and Ann Carney.
