Charlene Carter Burkett, 80, of Waco, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Friday, July 18, 2008, after a long and courageous fight. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday, July 22, at OakCrest Funeral Home with the Rev. Jim Gray officiating. Visitation will be from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Monday, July 21, at OakCrest Funeral Home, 4520 Bosque Blvd.
Mrs. Burkett will be buried at 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 23, at the Burkett Cemetery in Burkett, with the Rev. Bill Allen officiating.
Mrs. Burkett was born June 12, 1928 in Stephenville to Charlie and Ruby Carter. She attended public schools in Llano.
She graduated from Baylor University in 1949 with a B.A. in Education and Journalism. She received her Masterís of Education from Sul Ross State University in 1969. She was a lifetime member of the Texas Teachers Association. She spent 27 years teaching in Texas and Arkansas public schools including, DeKalb, Mason, Spring Branch in the Houston area, Midland, San Angelo, Austin, Georgetown, Cross Plains, Brownwood and Prescott, Ark.
Mrs. Burkett married Hardin Bradley in 1949. He died in 1967. She was later married to Henry Bruce Burkett in 1968. He passed away June 6, 1997, in Brownwood. She was a resident of Waco since 1997 and was an active member of First Woodway Baptist Church where she taught Sunday school and was a member of the Celebration Singers.
She is preceded in death by her parents; her first and second husbands; and one grandchild.
Mrs. Burkett is survived by her daughter, Sara Biggio and husband, Sonny of Waco; son, Ed Burkett and wife, Cynthia of Argyle; step-sons, Glenn Burkett and wife Gretchen of Malibu, Calif., Bruce Burkett and wife, Wendy of San Angelo; grandchildren, Cullen and Claire Burkett of Argyle, Dylan Burkett of Waco and Carrie Burkett of San Antonio.
