Verna Lee Hillyard, age 68, passed away in Brownwood Aug. 20, 2008, following a lengthy illness.

Graveside services for Verna Hillyard were at 3 p.m. Friday, Aug. 22, 2008, at Rocky Creek Cemetery in Brown County. The Rev. Lyn Rice officiated. Internment followed at Rocky Creek Cemetery under the direction of Heartland Funeral Home of Early.

Verna Hillyard was born March 11, 1940, in Cross Cut, Texas, to Thomas J. Miller and Myrtie Lee Slate Miller. Verna lived all her life in Brownwood area. Verna was a member of Hillcrest Baptist Church in Brownwood. Verna spent many years as a waitress in the restaurant business in the Brownwood area.

Survivors include three sons, Robert W. Slate of Ocean Grove, N.J., Norman L. Hartzell of Early, and Michael E. Miller of Odessa; four daughters, Beth Hartzell of Waco, Mattie Wright of Mineral Wells, Jeanie Riddell of Weatherford, and Nicki Miller of Odessa; two brothers, Thomas and James Miller of Brownwood, David and Roy Miller of Odessa; four sisters, Vonda Williamson of Early, Dolly Chamberlain of Brownwood, Myrtie Fulton of Odessa and Caroline Wilkins of Odessa; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren

She was preceded in death by her parents, Thomas and Myrtie Miller.
