He was a graduate of Zephyr High School and attended one year at Daniel Baker College before enlisting in the U.S. Army Air Corps in July 1941. He served with the 832nd Bomb Squadron until his plane was shot down over Germany. He served as a P.O.W. for six months until he was rescued by General Patton’s forces. Upon retirement, he and Erma Lee moved to Thrifty near Brownwood. He then became a “rancher,” raising cattle, goats, hay, and grain plus a garden. Robert was an avid Brownwood Lions and Howard Payne Yellow Jackets fan earning him the first Brownwood Lions Booster Club Lion Heart Award for outstanding support of all Brownwood Athletics 2001-2002. Over his years of life he served as a Boy Scout Master, served over 50 years with the Masonic Lodge including membership with the Brownwood Masonic Lodge No. 279, was also a member of the Heart of Texas Shriners, but most dear to him was serving as a deacon at Rocky Creek Baptist Church.
