Inus Harris Underwood, 82, passed away Saturday, Aug. 23, 2008, on her ranch in Valera, Texas.
Services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Valera Baptist Church with the Rev. Ralph Howell officiating. Interment will follow at the Valera Cemetery under the direction of Henderson Funeral Home of Coleman. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Inus was born June 5, 1926, in Essex, Mo., to Orvel Fred and Ellen O’Dell Harris. She was raised in Brady where she graduated from Brady High School. On Aug. 17, 1945, she married Jimmie Underwood and they celebrated 48 years of marriage. Jimmy preceded her in death in 1993.
In 1953 they adopted twins, Gary Wayne and Gay Lynn. They began a family business, Underwood’s Barbeque Cafeterias which they owned and operated in Abilene and the Dallas/Fort Worth area until their retirement in 1985. They retired in Coleman County where they owned and operated a cattle ranch, which Inus has continued to run since Jimmie’s death. Inus was a member of the Valera Baptist Church and Valera Volunteer Fire Department.
Survivors include her daughter, Gay and husband Rodney Morgan of Valera; two grandchildren, Ashley Steudeman of Granbury, and Clint Gray of Valera; a sister, Berry Hughes of Boerne, Texas; a brother, Fred Harris of Wall, Texas; great-granddaughter, Dacoda Steudeman of Granbury. Other survivors are John and Liz Morgan and their daughters, Faith, McKenzy and Preston; Jesse and Amanda Villa and their sons Jacob Fernando; and numerous nephews, nieces, cousins and friends.
Inus was preceded in death by her son, Gary Underwood, in 1997; her sister, Violet Harris; and her brother, Elmer Harris.
Pallbearers will be Tommy Harris, Michael Harris, Les Harris, Ted Harris, Steven Harris, Bobby Joe Harris and Ronnie Harris and honorary pallbearers will be Rodney Morgan, Clint Gray, Fred Harris, Cody Harris, Michael Walters, Eladio Tapia, Isidro Tapia, Valera Volunteer Fire Department and too many others to mention.
