Ray Self, 64, of Cross Plains, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, Aug. 1, 2007. Memorial services will be at 10 a.m. Monday, Aug. 6, at Higginbotham Chapel in Cross Plains with Dwaine Clower and Rufus Wilson officiating.
He was born to Ottis Self and Lora LaVada (Cross) Self on Jan. 19, 1943, in Denison, Texas. He married Theora May (Cheney) Hitts Self in Stamford, Texas, on Sept. 7, 1987. He spent 20-plus years in the military service. He enjoyed building things out of wood and steel. He never met a stranger and was always friendly and outgoing.
He is survived by his wife Theora Self of Cross Plains; sons, Jimmy Ray Self of Austin, Eric VanBraun Self, Shane Cody Self of Fort Sill, Okla., Lewis Hitts of Michigan, Paul Hitts of Michigan, Foster Hitts of Nebraska, Walter Hitts of Michigan and Jeffrey Hitts of Oklahoma; daughter; Phyllis Dyer of Vernon; sister; Iris Ratliff of Cross Plains; stepmom; Audean Self of Bangs; three aunts; one uncle; 28 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
