A memorial service for Lt. Col. Mary Helen McClelland, 87, will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, May 17, 2009, at the Union Presbyterian Church in Brownwood, Texas. Burial will be with full military honors at Greenleaf Cemetery, in Brownwood, Texas.
Lt. Col. Mary Helen McClelland, U.S. Army (Retired), peacefully passed away on Friday, April 17, 2009, in The Woodlands, Texas.
Lt. Col. McClelland was born on Jan. 2, 1922, in Brownwood, Texas. She graduated from Brown-wood High School in 1940, The John Sealy College of Nursing of the University of Texas in Galveston, Texas, in 1944, and Daniel Baker College, Brown-wood, Texas, in 1947. Lt. Col. McClelland’s grandfather, Brainard Taylor McClelland, Ph.D., was the founder of Daniel Baker College in 1889, which later merged with Howard Payne College in 1953. Lt. Col. McClelland spent her private nursing career from 1945-1948 as a Staff Nurse at Brownwood Memorial Hospital, Brownwood, Texas, 1948-49 in Austin, Texas, and Louisville, Ky., and 1949-53 as the Head Nurse/Staff Supervisor at Parkland Hospital in Dallas, Texas. In December of 1953, she was sworn in at Fort Sam Houston Headquarters in San Antonio, Texas, entering the military service on Jan. 6, 1954, with basic training at Fort Sam Houston, San Antonio, Texas, which was her first and last assignment. Lt. Col. McClelland’s 20-year military career began as a Staff Surgical Nurse at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo., and Augsburg, Germany, Surgical Ward Staff Nurse at Fort Hood, Killeen, Texas, Medical/Surgical Ward Staff Nurse in Vincenza, Italy, Medical/Surgical Ward Staff Nurse in William Beaumont, Texas, Medical/Surgical Ward Supervisor/Head Nurse, Sandia Base, Albuquerque, N.M., Medical/Surgical Ward Supervisor/Head Nurse at Tripler Army Medical Center, Oahu, Hawaii, Evening/Night Supervisor/Head Nurse, Fort Knox, Ky., Day Supervisor/Head Nurse, 121st Evacuation Hospital, Ascom, South Korea, and the last four years of her military career as the Chief Nurse/Training Officer, 41st Surgical Hospital, 1st Medical Group, Brooke Army Medical, Fort Sam Houston, San Antonio, Texas. She attained the rank of Lieutenant Colonel on July 15, 1970, while in Korea during the Vietnam War.
She never married, but is survived by one brother, Clive Wells McClelland Jr., and his wife, Mary Elizabeth Wallace McClelland. She is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews: Pamela Erickson, Clive Wells McClelland III, Ph.D. and his wife, Janet Kay McDaniel McClel-land, their children John Michael McClelland, Mary Elizabeth McClelland and Anne Michelle McClelland, David Beck McClelland and his wife Susan Allenson McClelland, their children Capt. Shelley Marie McClelland Raska and her husband Lance Anthony Raska, Kassandra Jane McClelland and Kyle David McClelland, and Robin McClelland Metzger and her husband George Henry Metzger, and their children Tanya Nicole Metzger Sallee and her husband Daniel Mason Sallee, Henry Wells “Hank” Metzger, John E. Thierman and his wife Jennifer K. Thierman, and David Thierman.
She was preceded in death by her eldest brother, Dewitt Brainard McClelland and her sister, Susan McClelland Thierman.
