Irene Janie Croker (Hill) died Sunday, Dec. 20, 2009, after a long illness at Western Hills care facility in Comanche, Texas. She was 92.
She was born at Verdi, Atacosa County, Texas, on April 28, 1917, to Eugene and Matti Popham. She grew up in and around the Fairview area until she was married to Leslie Harrison Croker Dec, 21, 1935. After moving to Comanche with her family she attended Texas Barber College in Fort Worth, Texas, where she became a licensed barber. From Comanche the family moved to Brownwood where they opened Croker’s Barber Shop on Coggin Avenue. She and her husband Leslie owned and operated the shop for 38 years. She loved being on the farm, sewing and especially quilting. After the death of her husband Leslie in October of 1982, she was married to Willie Ben Hill in September of 1984.
She is survived by two sons, Troy Leslie Croker and wife Peggy of Grandview, Texas, and Gary Doyle Croker and wife Linda of Comanche, Texas; a sister, Velma Jaksik and husband Victor of Loire, Texas; and two brothers, R.A. Popham and wife Evelyn of Moody, Texas, and Kenneth Popham and wife Flo of Fairview, Texas; eight grandsons, Shane, Christopher, Leslie, Terry, Dewane, Mark, Curtis and Tim; a host of great-grandsons and great-granddaughters; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Eugene and Matti Popham; husband Leslie Croker; husband, Willie Hill; a son, Roger Croker; four brothers, Clarence, Leslie, Herman and Richard Popham; a sister, Ethel Taylor; and two grandchildren, Kimberly and Gregory.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday Dec. 23, 2009, at the First Baptist Church in Llano, Texas, with the Rev. Rick Cundief officiating, with burial to follow in Llano Cemetery under the direction of Davis-Morris Funeral Home.
