On Thursday this week, the Texas Speaker of the House announced committee assignments. Although members have been working on issues throughout the interim and many bills have been filed, committee memberships must be assigned before bills can be considered.

This session, I am honored to have been appointed by the Speaker to serve as chairman of the House Committee on Insurance. As chairman, I am responsible for setting the agenda for the committee hearings. The House Committee on Insurance has jurisdiction over issues pertaining to insurance and the insurance industry; all insurance companies and other organizations of any type writing or issuing policies of insurance in the State of Texas, including their organization, incorporation, management, powers, and limitations; and the Texas Department of Insurance, the Texas Health Benefits Purchasing Cooperative, and the Office of Public Insurance Counsel.

I also have been appointed to the House Committee on Transportation, which I also previously chaired, and of which I have been a member since I was first elected. The Transportation Committee oversees the state highway system, control of traffic, commercial motor vehicles, rail, and water and air transportation systems. I look forward to continuing to guide transportation issues, which are critical to the long-term safety and economic success of this state.

Last session I had the privilege to serve as the Chairman of Homeland Security & Public Safety. I am proud of the work we accomplished last session on this committee. Although I no longer sit on the committee, I will continue to be involved in border security and public safety issues.
