To the editor:

Brownwood is a great town. What happened this last week is evidence of that.

Recently my stepfather passed away and our family is preparing to move our 80-year-old mother. When it comes to moving or preparing the new house for the move, she cannot do very much, so that’s where having a lot of kids comes in handy.

All three of my sisters and my brother from Oklahoma City took off work for most or all of the week and started renovations in preparation for her move next month. Altogether, we worked on this house over a week, putting in 14- to 16-hour days cleaning, painting, working on non-functioning doors, installing cabinets, cleaning truck loads of trash from the property, cutting down trees, starting the roofing project and the list goes on and on. It would have been very difficult to leave the “job-site” each day and try to get some lunch.

That’s where the merchants of Brownwood really shine. To support our family project, the following merchants prepared meals for a deeply discounted price for about 20 workers each day. We were supported by The Sticks, Wal-Mart, Wendy’s, McDonald’s, Kentucky Fried Chicken, Domino’s and Underwood’s. Their generosity is what makes Brownwood a great place to live and work. Our family cannot thank each of these merchants enough, along with all the grandchildren, friends, inlaws and everyone else who assisted in the project.
