To the editor:

Cindy Clayton, cheer sponsor for the Brownwood Lions Cheer Squad has resigned. For the past five years she has led and taught some of the most dedicated and talented cheerleaders to pass through Brownwood High School. Under her loving and strong leadership, Brownwood saw some of the most exciting pep rallies, with amazing stunts, cheers, and dances. They were the first cheerleaders to come home from Cheer Camp with multiple awards and invitations to join the UCA Cheer Squad. Cindy’s hard work and affection for her squads showed in everything she did and her girls loved and respected her as a friend as well as a sponsor.

The remarkable thing about all of this is that she not only coached without any monetary compensation or help, but that she battled cancer twice in this duration. Cindy stayed long hours away from her husband Chris, 15-year-old daughter Ali, and even younger 5-year-old daughter Claire, to ensure the success of the Freshman, Junior Varsity, and Varsity Squads each year.

Some people have failed to realize the sacrifices made at her expense and the importance of having a sponsor that truly cared about the cheerleaders’ well-being.

So from the lucky few who had the honor to cheer under your reign we will never forget the sacrifices: time away from your family, long days that turned into longer nights, bickering that divided us and your spirit that united us. We would never have had such success without your love and leadership.

We love you. Brownwood Cheerleading will never be the same.
