To the editor:
So many times the Red Cross is considered an organization for meeting needs during disasters such as floods, hurricanes or tornadoes. It is and does a wonderful job of dealing with those emergencies, but here in Brownwood, the Pecan Valley Chapter of Red Cross helps a special group of people every day — the recipients of Meals on Wheels of Brownwood and Early.
While the Meals on Wheels program is an independent organization which was established by the Church Women United in 1979, for many years the local Red Cross has been an indispensable part of our being able to serve the community. When doctors, visiting nurses or the hospital feel someone is in need of help with meals, they call the Red Cross, who palces that person on a route to have meals delivered. The Red Cross also contacts the hospital with the number of meals to prepare so volunteers can deliver them.
We need our local Red Cross Chapter. It has been here for us when we needed help. It needs our help now. Please, everyone, do what you can now before it is too late.
