To the editor:
This letter is in response to Martha Ours’ letter on Tuesday, June 3, about borrowed money by President Bush and “his Republican supporters in Congress.” You stated that we need to think about these kinds of things when we choose our leaders in November and you are right about things to think about.
First off, have you not noticed that the Democrats have been in control of Congress for the past several years? And how about the words of Nancy Pelosi who said, “Put us in control — we have a plan to finally reduce the price of gasoline.” (Guess what — it not only has NOT gone down but risen almost 07 percent in two years!) Sounds like their Democratic plan didn’t work. Big surprise!
Now for all the people who are so unhappy about how things are going in this country (Newsweek alleges 67 percent), let’s try to figure out why. Is it that over 94 percent of us have jobs, or that as a nation we have electricity and running water 24/7, or that we have fully stocked grocery stores nationwide, or that we can drive coast-to-coast without having to show ID as we move through each state, or when we wreck our car emergency workers show up and provide services to help and even a helicopter to take you to a hospital, or police and firefighters in every community to respond to any 9-1-1 call, or how about the complete religious, social and political freedoms we enjoy that are the envy of everyone in the world — and on and on and on. Maybe these are some of the reasons 67 percent of us are unhappy with this country.
Since we now know the Senator Obama will be the Democratic nominee in November, there are some things we need to think about here too (as you suggested) as we vote for president. Did you know that Obama (for the record) voted against banning abortions, supports affirmative action in colleges and government, questioned harsh penalties for drug dealers in 2001, says he will deal with street level drug dealings like a minimum wage affair, says he will meet with leaders of the Muslim nations, opposed the Patriot Act, supports granting driver’s licenses to illegal immigrants, extending welfare to illegals and allowing illegals to participate in Social Security. He also is a big believer in separation of church and state while having very murky religious convictions himself, wants to raise the capital gains tax, has repeatedly said the surge in Iraq has not succeeded, will not stand for the National Anthem and is ranked as the most liberal senator in the Senate today — and that takes some doing with the likes of Ted Kennedy and others!
So, if this is your idea of who you want to lead this country the next four years, go for it. As for me, I plan to make another choice.
