Brownwood rolls past Midland Christian, Azle and Boyd
BROCK — The defending Region I-4A softball champion Brownwood Lady Lions finally opened their season Friday with three victories, knocking off Midland Christian, Azle and Boyd to open play in the Brock tournament.
In Friday’s 12-1 win over Midland Christian, the Lady Lions scored four runs in the first inning, one in the second, three more in the third and another four-spot in the fourth.
Brownwood tallied just six hits but it drew six walks and took advantage of four Midland Christian errors.
Chyanne Ellett recorded a pair of hits, including a double, and two RBIs; Alexis Larrea added two hits with an RBI; Ashlynn Patteson tripled and drove home two; Danyelle Gongora singled and plated a run; Annie Gillispie drove home a run without a hit; and Kayla McFarden scored three runs after walking, reaching on a fielder’s choice and reaching on an error.
In the circle, Ellett pitched two hitless innings with six strikeouts and one walk, while Larrea worked two innings and yielded one earned run on four hits with two strikeouts and a walk.
In the 7-2 win over Azle, the Lady Lions scored all their runs in the bottom of the first and yielded a pair in the top of the seventh.
Ayanna Clemons contributed three of Brownwood’s eight hits, including two doubles, and drove home a pair of runs. Patteson and Gongora both singled and tallied two RBIs each, while Larrea, Gillispie and Emily Perez each added a single and scored a run.
Ellett went the distance in the circle, giving up two unearned runs on seven hits with 12 strikeouts and three walks.
In Friday’s 10-1 finale over Boyd, the Lady Lions lit up the scoreboard in each of their first four trips to the plate. The Lady Lions led 2-0 after one inning, 4-0 after two frames, 7-1 through three and 10-1 after four.
Patteson paced the offense with two hits and a couple of RBIs; Victoria Sanchez notched two hits and drove in a run; Clemons and JaKobee Holloway finished with a hit and two RBIs apiece; Larrea doubled and plated a runner and McFarden singled and knocked in one; and Perez and Karly Harper added hits as well.
Perez pitched all five innings for Brownwood, surrendering just one earned run on five hits with four strikeouts and no walks.
The Lady Lions resume Brock tournament action Saturday.
