LIBERTY HILL — The Brownwood Lady Lions opened the track and field season with a first-place team finish at the Liberty Hill Relays Saturday, while the Lions placed third as a team.
The Lady Lions finished with 150 points, 19 more than runner-up Georgetown East View (131). The Lions, meanwhile, amassed 114 points which left them behind meet champion East View (169) and runner-up Liberty Hill (148).
The Lady Lions brought home six gold medals, three silver and a pair of bronze.
Trinity Buitron won the 100-meter hurdles (15.98), 300-meter hurdles (49.12) and pole vault (9-6) to spark Brownwood's effort, while Aleia Burkett came in first in the discus (95-11) as did the 4x100 relay team of Lakyn Ratliff, Madison Chesser, Tristan Escamilla and Aleyia Cotton (50.03) and the 4x200 relay team of Escamilla, Chesser, Jamicah Bushnell and Cotton (1:46.2).
Finishing as runners-up were Cotton in the long jump (15-5.5), Amy Compean in the 100-meter hurdles (17.1) and the 4x400 relay team of Kyra Young, Alyssa Couey, Cotton and Alex Fowler (4:15.5).
Placing third were Burkett in the shot put (31-3.5) and Fowler in the 300-meter hurdles (50.38).
Coming in fourth were Alyssa Preston in the shot put (29-1), the distance medley of Young, Taylar Kinzler, Fowler and Audrey Boren (14:35.88) and the sprint medley of Kinzler, Bushnell, Escamilla, and Chesser (4:52.55).
Fifth-place efforts belonged to Compean in the 300-meter hurdles (52.52) and the 4x800 relay team of Young, Boren, Carly Person and Alexis Dossey (11:36.19).
Meanwhile, the Lions earned five gold medals and five bronze.
Winning their events were Kirk Vickers in the long jump (21-1) and triple jump (43-11.5), Nick Salazar in the high jump (6-3), Paul David Quillin in the pole vault (13-0) and the sprint medley of Josh Estrada, Jack Robinson, Patrick Nash and Vickers (3:54.02).
Coming in third were Xavier Armenta in the 300-meter hurdles (42.58); the 4x200 relay team of Vickers, Quillin and Nash (1:34.32); the 4x400 relay team of Jason Sanchez, Tommy Bowden, Braden Jetton and Armenta (3:39.99); the 4x800 relay team of Robinson, Joe Gosch, Estrada and Sanchez (9:09.75); and the distance medley of Logan Dick, Sanchez, Bowden and Estrada (11:58.03).
