Brownwood continues Ice Breaker tournament action Friday against Merkel
ABILENE — The Brownwood Lady Lions opened the 19-team Abilene Ice Breaker softball tournament Thursday with two more victories, improving their record to 7-1 on the young season. The Lady Lions first chalked up a 2-1 morning victory over Abilene High, then knocked off Coahoma, 5-3, in afternoon action.
In the victory over Abilene High, Brownwood scored both its runs in the top of the third while giving up a run in the bottom of the sixth.
The Lady Lions finished with five hits — a triple by Victoria Sanchez and singles by Annie Gillispie, Alexis Larrea, Ashlynn Patteson and Chyanne Ellett, who drove in both runs.
In the third, Patteson led off with a single, Gillispie followed with a one-out hit and Ellett's two-RBI single up the middle scored both runners.
In the circle, Ellett pitched five innings and allowed one earned run on four hits with seven strikeouts and three walks.
Against Coahoma, the Lady Lions tallied three runs in the bottom of the first inning and two more in the third, then held off a late rally.
Brownwood made of the most of its five hits as Ellett contributed a double, a single and drove in two more runs, while Gillispie, Sanchez and Ryleigh Dalleh also chipped in hits. Kayla McFarden added an RBI as well.
Ellett plated Gillispie, who singled, and Patteson, who walked, with a double in the first inning, then Ellett later scored on an error. In the third, McFarden's RBI fielder's choice plated Gillispie, who reached on one of three Coahoma errors, while another miscue allowed Ellett, who singled, to come home.
In the circle, Larrea worked all five innings and gave up three runs on five hits with two strikeouts and three walks.
The Lady Lions will face Merkel at 3:15 p.m. Friday at Red Bud Field, Wichita Falls Rider at Abilene High at 10 a.m. Saturday and Wall at Red Bud Field at 3 p.m. Saturday to conclude tournament action.
